Diversity data in ESS

Help us create an inclusive and positive working environment for all of our colleagues.

We’d be grateful if colleagues could take a moment to check their personal details in Employee Self Service (ESS).

Following consultation with our LGBT Plus Network and recommendations from Stonewall we have revised the list of classifications relating to sexual orientation in ESS.

The categories ‘Homosexual’ and ‘Not Specified’ have been removed in favour of distinctive classifications that better reflect our diverse staff network.

Colleagues can now choose one of the following classifications:

  • Bisexual
  • Gay man
  • Gay woman/lesbian
  • Heterosexual/straight
  • Other
  • Prefer not to say

Colleagues that have previously used the ‘Homosexual’ and ‘Not Specified’ categories will now need to select a new one from the revised list.

Data on personal attributes such as ethnic background or sexual orientation directly influences our policies and procedures– we want to create an inclusive working environment for all colleagues, and so the more information we have, the better levels of support we’ll be able to provide.

Data of this nature is also important for accreditors such as Stonewall and Athena SWAN as it helps measure our actions against specific groups.

All information and data is treated as strictly confidential and cannot be used to identify individuals.

Contact Simon Chandler-Wilde if you have any queries.
