Cycle ride gives children the right to play

Professor Mithen

Congratulations to Pro-Vice-Chancellor Steve Mithen who has recently completed a 320 mile bike ride from Liège to London in just three days in aid of charity.

120 riders completed the gruelling ride with each raising at least £1,000. Professor Mithen's total contribution from family, friends and University of Reading colleagues was an excellent £1,551.

The charity was Right to Play that aims to improve the lives of children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world through sport and play activities, teaching children about team work, cooperation and respect.

As Pro-Vice-Chancellor for International and External Engagement, Professor Mithen has travelled to several very different developing countries and said: "I have always seen the power of sport in building communities and giving kids some fun when they face extraordinary challenges in their young lives.

"Many thanks to all of those colleagues at the University of Reading who supported my charity bike ride by generously donating to Right to Play. My fund raising web-site remains open and so there is still time to make a donation to help me reach my final target of £2,000!"
