Maggie Philbin talks to Professor Jon Gibbins for local radio show

BBC Radio Berkshire's roving reporter and former Tomorrow's World presenter Maggie Philbin visited the Whiteknights Campus this week, to find out about the University's cutting-edge research which aims to combat heart disease.

Maggie enjoyed a tour of the University's Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (ICMR), and conducted live interviews with Reading academics highlighting their important work.

Professor Jon Gibbins, ICMR Director, gave an overview of Reading research that is working towards the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Dr Sam Boateng described the work of his lab which is aiming to understand how heart muscle cells work and what causes heart disease.

Dr Julie Lovegrove, from the University's Hugh Sinclair Unit for Human Nutrition, explained to Maggie the importance of multidisciplinary research at Reading, and discussed her work that is looking to understand how particular nutrients in the diet impact on our risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
