The SCR organises an annual calendar of events for members and guests.

Members and guests who take part in SCR events are asked to note that they do so at their own risk, and neither the SCR nor its members accept liability for any mishaps.

Wine of the Month

Friday 29 September, SCR Lounge, Park House, 5.30-7.30pm

£2.00 per glass

Welcome back! Come and try some Spanish wine from our cellars.  No need to book but bring sufficient cash to pay for your wine.

Sloe picking for Sloe Gin bottling / botanical walk

Sunday 15 October

Meet at the Horse & Groom at 1.00pm for pub lunch, or at 2.00pm at St John's Church, Mortimer, if just attending the walk.

The walk will take approximately 2 hours and include some varied botanical digressions and a highlight will be the traditional picking of sloes (fruits of the Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)). (NB the sloes will be later bottled for a sloe gin tasting event to be organised in Spring 2018 - watch this space!)

This event is child-friendly. Car lifts available by request.

Wine Tasting: Flagship varieties from Northern Italy and Tuscany

Wednesday 25 October, Acacias, London Road Campus, 5.30 - 7.30pm

£20.00

We explore some of the prominent grape varieties from Northern Italy and Tuscany in their DOC expressions. White varieties include Ribolla Gialla, Garganega, Müller Thurgau, Gewürztraminer from the North-East, and Moscato Bianco and Gavi from the North-West. Red varieties include Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Teroldego, Corvina, Rondinella in their various declinations: Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino, Langhe, Barolo, Valtellina Superiore, Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso and Amarone della Valpolicella.

University Fireworks Display

Friday 3 November, Whiteknights Campus, 7.00pm

The Vice-Chancellor is delighted to announce that on 3 November the University will be hosting a Fireworks Display on the Whiteknights campus. Some of you may recall the wonderful display in 2015 and he is promising an even better event this year, so put the date in your diary now! Further details will be circulated in due course.

Beenham Toddle Walk

Sunday 5 November, 11.00am

Walk led by Simon Andrews at Beenham, 2-3 miles (the Beenham Toddle). Very easy route but could be muddy. Meet at St Mary's church car park (RG7 5NL), Lunch at the Six Bells. This event is child-friendly.

Bourbon Tasting

Friday 10 November, 5.30-7.30pm, SCR Meetings Room, Park House

£15.00 per person

If you enjoy whisky, you may be interested in this bourbon tasting. Bourbon is the most popular form of American whisky, distinguishable from other forms of whisky because it must be made from 51% corn. Within that, there is a wide variety of flavours and scents. This tasting will offer a selection of bourbons to give you an introduction to its diversity.
