Student Led Music

In addition to the many centrally co-ordinated music opportunities, our students also pro-actively run many of their own groups, including:

Reading University Music Society (RUMS)

RUMS offer a diverse range of musical ensembles, suitable for players and singers of all standards.

New members are always welcome, and the groups are aimed at anyone who simply enjoy making music in a fun and friendly environment.

RUMS hold at least one concert each term, showcasing their diverse range of ensembles and all the hard work (and fun!) that members put in. They also hold regular socials, which provide wonderful opportunities to meet new people and make new friends.

RUMS ensembles may change throughout the year, but usually include:

  • Flute Choir
  • Clarinet Choir
  • Saxophone Ensemble
  • Choir
  • Wind Band
  • Brass Ensemble
  • String Ensemble

Reading University Singer Songwriters

Reading University Band Society is a student society for musicians at the University of Reading to meet like minded people wishing to form bands, organize jams, and play gigs! Run by students, for students. Their goal is to revitalise the music scene at the University and in the surrounding area by ensuring bands get as much help and support as possible. Members contribute to the society by joining bands, arranging gigs and attending live music events. They are headed by a democratically elected committee of five members who help organise events throughout each academic year in line with the Societies Constitution of Reading University Students' Union.

Reading University Gospel Choir (RUGC)

RUGC are a student run choir directed by talented musicians who provide excellent songs for the choir to perform at their events. They perform regularly at both university and community events including carol concerts, weddings and charity events.

At the end of the society's year they hold their annual showcase, usually in March, where they perform all the songs learnt through the year in addition to some new ones.

No musical knowledge or auditions are required for new members only an enthusiasm for performing.

They perform a wide range of songs from This Little Light of Mine, to Lean On Me, and Hold Back the River.

Throughout the year they hold many socials to bond as a choir and enjoy a range of activities together to suit all tastes.

RUGC meet every Wednesday in Palmer 102, Whiteknights Campus, 6:15pm-7:45pm and welcome anyone to join.

If any musicians would be interested in performing alongside RUCG, then please contact the choir or a member of the committee for more information.
