Concerto Competition

  • Available to current students and staff of The University of Reading
  • win the chance to play a concerto (or sing) with Symphony Orchestra
  • deadline for applications Friday 23 March 2012
  • auditions on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 April 2012

 

  • open to players of any instrument or singers
  • accompanists available if required
  • entrants must be members of the University at the time of audition
  • you must audition with the work you intend to perform
  • auditions will be 10 minutes of music maximum. Be prepared to play at least 2 contrasting movements, or parts of movements
  • the piece you choose must be currently scored for Symphony Orchestra
  • a particularly difficult orchestral accompaniment, or a very large or unusual scoring, may make it difficult to award a concerto opportunity, however good your audition.

 

 Symphony Orchestra usually performs with:

2 Flutes
1 Piccolo
2 Oboes
2 Clarinets
2 Bassoons

4 Horns
2 trumpets
3 Trombones
1 Tuba

Timps
1 Percussion

8 Violin I
8 Violin II
4 Viola
4 Cello
2 Bass

Extras to this scoring may be available, depending on the overall scoring for the programme.

Applications made after the closing date may be considered at the discretion of the University's Director of Music. There is no charge for competing, and no expenses will be offered by the University to competing candidates.

Candidates who win the Concerto Competition must accept or decline the offer within two weeks from receipt of the offer.
