Student travel awards

The Arthur Hosier and Meyer Sassoon Travel Award schemes
The Arthur Hosier and Meyer Sassoon Travel Award schemes provide part-funding for students registered in the Faculty of Life Sciences to undertake extra-curricular study travel, in the UK or overseas, which will advance their education generally.
Awards are made for travel on a student's own initiative, and are intended to encourage students to undertake additional special study travel to complement their academic studies. Funding is typically provided for postgraduate students to attend international conferences in order to present their work, or for undergraduate students to undertake vacation projects overseas which are related to their degree subject.
A total of 29 awards were made to students in Life Sciences during 2007-8 and 2008-9. One was to Louise Shirley, BSc Applied Ecology and Conservation, who travelled to Madagascar during the summer vacation to work as a research assistant for the Society for Environmental Exploration. Louise said: "Madagascar has the greatest number of critically endangered primates of any country in the world, and to have the opportunity to join the effort to protect them was a great honour. My time there altered my perspective on life and my future career plans dramatically." You can find-out about Louise's trip to Madagascar here. Reports from other trips part-funded by the Arthur Hosier and Meyer Sassoon Travel Awards are available below.
Applications for funding are considered four times a year by the Award Selection Committee. Submission dates for applications depend on the proposed date of travel, as follows:
- 31 July for travel during the period October - December (or later*)
- 31 October for travel during the period January - March (or later*)
- 31 January for travel during the period April - June (or later*)
- 30 April for travel during the period July - September (or later*)
*If applicants need a decision on support from the fund well in advance of travel.
It is normally expected that a contribution towards the cost of the trip will be made by the student, the student's sponsor (if applicable) and the student's School or Department.
To apply, please read the guidance notes [PDF 106KB], and then submit a completed application form [PDF 87 KB] to the Joint Faculty Office in the Geography Building.
