Web Content Management System: Activedition

Your website within Activedition

Web pages in the CMS are divided into Areas. Each top level Area has an URL in the form of www.reading.ac.uk/xxx where xxxx is the name of the Area. Area names are based on subject or group ie school/department/research group name or acronym, or area of activity. Sub-Areas can be created within the top-level Areas.

Areas

The aim of setting up Areas of the CMS is to:

  • Provide an area of information covering one activity
  • Provide areas under common overall sub-administrator
  • Enable the easy transfer of responsibility for activities between groups when responsibilities change.
  • Due to the navigation system to be used, areas of the CMS are used to provide related content under a common URL.
  • Provide areas with different security levels.

Administration of your Area(s)

Schools, Departments, main areas of Administration, Research Groups and other groups (e.g. Centres) will have, within the ‘Reading plus One’ branding guideline (i.e. where the group is listed in the University Calendar):

  • An Area at the top level of the CMS.
  • A Sub-Administrator permissions group populated with the username(s) of the main administrator(s) of the site.
  • As Sub-Administrator, the ability to allocate content contributor permissions within their site.
  • As standard, an Area for Internal content.
  • A set of content libraries
  • On request, an Area within the closed Area, for content which needs to be behind authentication for targeted groups or individuals.

Sub-Areas

Where groups or individuals do not have their own ‘Reading plus One’ identity, but are publishing information on behalf of The University, they will:

  • Have an Area within the relevant School/Directorate Area of the CMS
  • A top level alias pointing directly to the home page, where relevant
  • A Sub-Administrator group that inherits a subset of the permissions of the School or top-level Sub-Administrator,
  • Share the School libraries unless required otherwise, in which case they would have their own libraries.
  • Have the use of Internal and Closed/Authenticated Areas within the appropriate School/Directorate Areas.
