Remote System Access (Phase 2)
IT is working on a Remote Systems Access project which aims to provide University staff with secure access to corporate IT systems when not connected to the wired campus network. This will create a more flexible and responsive working environment, provide wider access to more systems and ensure better security to enable the access to be audited.
The first phase of the project was a Proof of Concept for remote systems access and this provided off-campus access to the Employee Self-Service component of the HR system (Trent). This enables staff members to remotely manage their personal details, access training course booking opportunities, and submit timesheets and absence request forms at any time, and from anywhere.
This second phase of the project aims to implement a method of providing access to corporate IT systems remotely through a secure VPN which requires a 2-factor authentication via a mobile phone app. The systems in scope for this phase are Agresso, SITS and Trent with potential to support other IT systems in future. This solution will also be used to support the Agresso online expenses for all staff.
A pilot run has been successfully completed and following feedback from the pilot users, the project is now making a number of refinements to the service. These will ensure that:
- For web applications, users can access applications directly through their web browser
- For client applications, users will be able to access the applications through the RemoteApp and Desktop Connections feature installed by default in Windows 7 and later.
- The user guide is clear and easy to follow
Assuming final user testing goes well and there are no technical issues, we aim to able to offer this service after Easter. We will send out further communications giving full instructions on the steps users will need to take to make use of this new service.
Instructions and user guides will be made available through the IT web site for users to follow to be able to enrol and use the service.
This 2 factor authentication solution will in future replace the current University VPN solution.
