Annual leave, public holidays and closure days

Retirement

The University believes that it is important for all employees to balance their work and personal lives. We therefore provide a number of paid annual leave days, public holidays and closure days for the purpose of providing extended periods of time during which employees can take a break from work, and then return to their jobs refreshed.

The leave year runs from 1 October each year, to the 30 September the following year. In the first and last years of service, leave entitlement will accrue in proportion to completed service.

Each School/Department will have its own procedures and rules for the booking and taking of annual leave. Some Schools/Departments will have restrictions on when leave can be taken.  However, the general principles remain the same throughout the University:

  • Employees should plan their leave as far in advance as possible.
  • All requests for leave must be approved in advance by the relevant Head of School/Department (or his/her nominee), who will not unreasonably withhold consent.
  • Employees in relevant roles should take their leave in university holidays wherever possible.
  • All employees are encouraged to take their full leave entitlement each year, and leave can only be carried forward into the next leave year in exceptional circumstances (which is limited to a maximum of one working week).

Further information about annual leave can be found in absence and leave in the policies and procedures section of the website.
