An Introduction To Project Management

Outline: The focus of the day will be to provide a practical 'project management toolbox' that you can actually use in your day to day work. Topics covered: practical model; tools and techniques; project management as a process. This is a consistently popular course with lots of useful practical ideas.

Management Skills For Research Staff

Outline: This introductory course will look at the difference between leadership and managerial abilities and examine some essential tools of management in a research environment. Topics will include listening and responding; situational management and the art of matching style to the situation or the person; implementing change and getting people to support change rather than resist it.

Management Skills: An Introduction For New Line Managers

Outline: This day introduces you to the essential elements of line managing. Later, you can supplement it with the ILM Development Award.

Who is it for?

Anyone who is interested in either looking towards a line management role, or someone new to a management role.

Following the session you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of a supervisor/manager
  • Identify the skills needed by a supervisor/manager
  • Assess your own leadership skills
  • Consider what motivates your staff
  • Plan to delegate effectively

ILM Development Award: Management Development Programme

Outline: We have developed our own ILM accredited 5 ½ day course to give managers, team leaders and supervisors the skills to manage themselves and staff more effectively. All sessions to be attended. You need to be line managing at least one person.

Who is it for?

Anyone who has a responsibility for managing or supervising staff and who is committed to personal growth and development.

We will speak with both line managers and interested participants about the requirements of this course prior to confirming your place. Previous participants say this course has changed the way they manage themselves and other people and made them more effective in their roles.

Course schedule

This course runs over 5 ½ non-consecutive days, from 09.00 - 16.30 and 9.30-1.30 on the final day. Managers will be invited to join the group for the final presentations from 11.30-12.30 noon followed by lunch. Tea, coffee and sandwich lunch will be provided daily.
