Further Internal Training

Notepad on a deskThere are a host of training opportunities open to staff at the University of Reading beyond those offered by People Development and CQSD. Below we highlight some of the departments who may be able to help you in your continued professional development.

The University Library

Library staff offer training in the effective use of the Library. This includes presentations, and workshops for undergraduates, postgraduates and staff, tours of subject floors and self-paced and workshop instruction on electronic sources of information. See:

Statistical Services Centre

Courses for non-statisticians are targeted at scientists and technologists who find themselves dealing with data on a fairly regular or infrequent basis. Their aim is to furnish participants with a good level of competence on a range of statistical methods and principles. Courses for statisticians are on advanced and modern statistical topics. Within them participants are shown how to use effective methods using major statistical packages. These courses are aimed at applied statisticians and use examples from medical and other areas of application. There is a charge for these courses. See the Statistical Services Centre website.

International Study and Language Institute

A variety of programmes to improve spoken and written English are available and can, by arrangement, include staff whose first language is not English. Staff can also learn other languages. See:

Media training

The University press office organizes a number of small group media training sessions with an external media trainer. The sessions, which are very interactive, take place on campus and focus on developing confidence in radio and TV interview situations as well as providing quotes and comment for the news media. The training is most relevant to academics looking to develop a media profile or to promote their research. The press office can also provide a tailored day for a Department, School or research theme. Informal media guidance is always available by phone or in person from the press office. More information at How we can help - Using the press office.

Health and Safety Services

Health and Safety Services organise a wide variety of training sessions, many of which are mandatory for certain groups of staff. An explanation of the work of Health and Safety Services is given at each new staff induction. Their current programme can be seen from Course Details.
