German for Beginners

Study German from scratch at Reading

The Department of German Studies at Reading University is pleased to announce new courses in German for complete beginners. These programmes are being offered as part of a Collaborative Agreement with the Open University and are available from October 2007.

Students admitted to these programmes will normally have demonstrated their suitability for an intensive language course by holding an A level in another European foreign language. The Department will be providing a course of intensive language study in the first year, where students will have 6 tutorials per week in small groups and will be expected to spend an average of 8 hours per week on independent study.

These modules can fit into a study programme in a number of ways, either as a route into a German degree or a stand-alone intensive German course in the first year.

You may decide that you just want to take this intensive course for 1 year (taking you to A level standard in German) or even just for one term (taking you to GCSE level standard in German) – but you might be considering carrying on with a degree course in German; if so see the details on the German department web site

There are three routes available:

Route 1

  • Take both modules 1&2

  • Follow the course in the Autumn and Spring terms

  • Continue with  single or joint degree courses in German

 Route 2

  • Take both modules 1&2

  • Follow the course in the Autumn and Spring terms

  • Achieve A level standard in German

 Route 3

  • Take module 1 only

  • Follow the course in the Autumn term only

  • Achieve GCSE standard in German
