Returning students

Students standing in a doorwayWelcome to all returning students.

You may be returning to Reading after a break in study for one reason or another or it may be that you are returning to the next part of your degree after the summer holidays. In either case, we want you to be able to settle back into Reading as smoothly as possible.

You may not see yourself as a Fresher but it is still well worth reading through the information on this site as most of it will still be relevant to you.

Settling back in

Students sat at a desk in the LibraryOne of the most important things to do is to re-establish contact with your Personal Tutor. If you  are re-starting or continuing on the same degree programme your Personal Tutor should be the same person as when you were a student previously but sometimes changes are necessary, for example if a staff member is on research leave.

If you have had some time away from study you will find yourself with a different year group and this can be difficult to adapt to. You may feel that the friends you made before have moved on and that you are with a new year group that is hard to relate to. Try to talk to people as soon as possible. You might be a bit older than some of your fellow students but that need not be a negative thing.

If you have changed course

Postgraduate studentsIf you have changed course you may find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings. You are likely to have been allocated a new Personal Tutor and you will have to get used to new classes and staff and possibly new buildings and environments.

Changing course can be an extrememly positive and enlightening experience. It is a strong choice to make and you should be assured that whilst you are still in control of your university experience, there is support available for you, as always.

Consider seeing a Study Adviser

students studyingYou might consider making an appointment to see a Study Adviser. They will be able to review  previous work with you, help you to plan for the forthcoming term and also address any specific study skills needs you might have. They offer 1-1 sessions, workshops and resources and we would suggest that every student look at their website (link below).

Homesickness

Canada geese and goslings on lake, Whiteknights campusIf you have had a break from study it can take a little time to settle back into life at university.   Some students find that they get very homesick when they return and this is not uncommon or insurmountable.

There is a range of information and advice available to you if you are feeling homesick. The important thing is to try and talk to someone about how you are feeling - you won't be alone in feeling like this.
