Information for External Examiners

New External Examiners will be sent a formal appointment letter and information pack about external examining at the University of Reading in hard copy, usually in January or early February.  Continuing External Examiners will be sent a re-appointment letter each year and may also refer to the online information pack below.

In all cases it is essential that the Declaration and Acceptance of Appointment form is completed and returned to the Examinations and Graduation Office annually.

For all ad hoc queries about external examiners, or to request an additional information pack in hard copy, please email .

Briefing Session for new External Examiners

The Centre for Quality Support and Development runs a briefing session for external examiners who are new to the University of Reading.  It provides an opportunity to visit the campus and ask any questions you may have, and learn about the role of an external examiner and the assessment policies and procedures we use at Reading.

External Examiners for professional programmes who are drawn from outside of the Higher Education sector might particularly wish to attend this session, but it is also recommended if you are new to external examining.

The next session will be held on 26 March 2019, 11.30am-4pm to include lunch, and External Examiners who plan to attend will be contacted with more details nearer the time. If you would like to register your interest, please email
