Online counselling

Meet a counsellor online

1:1 confidential appointments are available for those not able to attend the service.

If you already have an online password you can enter an online counselling session.

How does it work?

An online counselling session is a real-time one to one confidential meeting with a qualified counsellor/therapist.

You will agree a time for the session, which will be accessed from this website. At the agreed time you enter the online service area with your private password, and meet together for a private discussion of up to 50 minutes in a designated area. No-one will have access to this except you and your counsellor/therapist, and the text of the session is deleted immediately afterwards. Before it is deleted you will be able to print it out if you wish, and a summary copy will be held in the counselling service in the usual way. For more information on record keeping see our leaflet on Confidentiality and Data Protection (PDF - 221KB).

During your meeting your counsellor/therapist will be in a private office, and give their undivided attention to the session. it is expected that you will do the same.

The first step is to register with our administrators and then arrange an initial face-to-face meeting with their counsellor/therapist to discuss your needs.

Getting a password

Clients wishing to have a 1:1 Online Counselling appointment will need a special username and password, which is issued exclusively for this purpose, and used to enter the sessions..

This is done to protect your identity and privacy, and means that no-one will be able to make a link with your university ID. If you have been issued a counselling ID and password and have reason to believe that your identity has been compromised, then inform the Counselling Service secretary immediately.

The online service is encrypted, like your online banking service and other secure systems, and we believe that it is as secure as any online service can be. All private online discussions between counsellors and clients are deleted immediately after the session, and the few designated IT workers who need access to the server are subject to security agreements.

To request an appointment visit Counselling and Wellbeing reception and speak to one of our administrators. We are based in the Carrington Building, room 106.
