Staff Profile:Dr Richard Steward

Name:
Dr Richard Steward
Job Title:
Learning Technology Officer
Responsibilities:

My postgraduate and postdoctoral research work in zoology and population genetics involved the use of computers for data analysis. I then spent 15 years designing and implementing scientific databases, working closely with microbiologists, chemists and physicists. This experience taught me that a key element of implementing anything involving technology is the ability to explain to users, the strengths and technical limitations of any system.

In 1992, I negotiated part-time sabbatical leave with my employer at that time, to take up a Teaching Research Fellowship in the School of Animal and Microbial Sciences (AMS), at the University of Reading. This was for a HEFCE-funded project aimed at overcoming the barriers to the practical implementation of "technology enhanced learning".

Since returning to the University in January 2002, as Learning Technology Officer, my key interest has been working alongside staff at Reading, to help them identify the best resources we have available, to implement their ideas in learning and teaching. My particular interest is looking at initiatives which help staff with providing early assessment and feedback to Part One students. The use of simple simulations with the teaching of Part Two and Part Three students is also a particular interest.
