University Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning

Overview

The aim of these awards is to recognise and reward individuals who have made significant, ongoing contributions to teaching and learning, either through direct interactions with students, their support of staff within the School/section or their contributions to a Faculty, Directorate or University initiative. These awards replace the Faculty and School Awards.

Award scheme

In 2010/11 8 awards of £1000 and 7 awards of £200 were made. In 2012 a maximum of £10,000 will be awarded. Staff will be invited to nominate a colleague for an award using the form provided. A panel of Faculty Directors and Head of Directorates will determine which nominations best meet the criteria for the awards. Nominations can be made in the following categories:

Academic/Teaching Staff: staff who have an academic/teaching role. Nominations for all staff who have a teaching role including 'new' lecturers, teaching fellows and experienced staff are encouraged.

Teaching and learning support staff: staff who support teaching and learning in its various guises across the University. This category includes, for example, technical support staff, secretarial staff who provide direct support to teaching staff and/or students, postgraduate demonstrators, programme directors, teaching assistants, admissions tutors, Library, Student Services and ITS staff, etc.

Submitting a nomination

All staff are invited to nominate a colleague for an award using the form provided. Nominations should be sent to CDoTL, Miller Building.

Heads of School and School Directors of Teaching and Learning and their Directorate equivalents are strongly encouraged to submit nominations for staff in their School/Directorate.

Guidance note

Whilst nominees do not have to be informed of the nomination, staff are encouraged to discuss the nomination with the nominee as this can lead to a stronger application.
