HEA Workshop
Thursday 30 May 2013
You are invited to a one day HEA sponsored workshop on Engaging Students in Teaching and Learning organised in the Department of Chemistry on 30th May 2013. The talks will revolve around the increasingly prevalent move towards encouraging undergraduates to take a more active role in the delivery and planning of the curriculum. The speakers, from various institutions around the UK, will relate their experiences of a variety of different initiatives aimed at student engagement. This is a fairly informal event and we hope to have time for plenty of discussion around the ideas described and opportunities to share experiences. The event is aimed primarily as new lecturers or teaching fellows but open to all who are interested. Please register with Judy Butler
(j.m.butler@reading.ac.uk) if you wish to come along.
Adding 'purpose' to instruction on the use of sources, referencing and 'avoiding plagiarism'
A lecture and workshop delivered by Diane Schmitt, Senior Lecturer in EFL/TESOL at Nottingham Trent University.
Wednesday 5 June, 12.30 - 14.00, Carrington 201. Light refreshments (tea, coffee, pastries) will be provided. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch.
Instruction on use of sources in academic writing has been dominated by approaches that aim to teach students to 'avoid plagiarism'. These approaches are supported by the use of text matching software such as that used by Turnitin. Diane Schmitt will argue that these approaches focus too much on the words that students borrow from their sources and too little on the ideas from those sources. In this talk, she will offer ideas on how lecturers might redress that imbalance by focusing on the purpose of source use in academic writing. She will explore with participants why and how writers make use of the ideas of others' in their own writing and consider pedagogical interventions that aim to help students move beyond a mechanical approach to source use to one that helps to develop purposeful use of sources.
Diane Schmitt is Deputy Director for the MA in English Language Teaching at Nottingham Trent University and teaches on a range of English for Academic Purposes courses. She has co-authored two textbooks on teaching academic vocabulary. She regularly presents, publishes and consults on academic writing, plagiarism, vocabulary acquisition, language testing, materials development and the international student experience. She is also the Chair of BALEAP.
This event will also see the launch of The Academic Integrity Toolkit: a collection of research-informed, adaptable teaching materials to support students in developing their academic writing and referencing practices. The Academic Integrity Toolkit is the major output of a collaborative project at the University funded by the TLDF; 'What did I do wrong?: supporting independent learning practices to avoid plagiarism.'
Please sign up via the Employee Self Service.

T&L blog - Engage in Teaching and Learning
CDoTL has launched its new blog called Engage in Teaching and Learning.
Through regular contributions from staff it is hoped the blog will become a dynamic and speedy mechanism by which to disseminate T&L-related information across the University.
The key aims of the blog will be to;
- Rapidly disseminate T&L news, including relevant updates from T&L committees and policy updates to a wide audience
- Provide colleagues throughout the University with the opportunity to highlight good practice, to provide one another with support (e.g. in the form of 'top tips' etc.) and to reflect on T&L initiatives.
Submissions to the blog can be on any Teaching and Learning related topic and all documents for publishing should be sent along with the text of your article. There is no submission deadline but in order to keep the blog up-to-date we hope that colleagues will regularly submit entries so that it becomes a resource that reflects the interests and thoughts of the University's T&L community.
We have included some brief guidelines below to help you with the structure of articles if you are not already familiar with blogging.
If you have any queries in relation to the Engage in Teaching and Learning blog or would like to submit an article please email engageint&lblog@lists.reading.ac.uk.
We look forward to receiving your submissions in the near future.
Key structure of articles
When submitting your blog post please consider and include the following;
- A heading for your article.
- Spell out acronyms and keep in mind that the blog is seen by readers both internal and external to the University
- Consider using sub-headings if your article is longer than a couple of paragraphs
- Any URL links you wish to be included in the text (either as embedded links or highlighted words).
- Authored by (if this should be attributed to someone other than the person submitting the article).
You can also include;
- Media - add any attachments such as pictures, videos or podcasts to the submission email which you wish to be included in the post (these must be less than 1MB each); please provide descriptions of those people featured.
- Suggested keywords (tags) to be added to the article. These can help users of the blog search for specific terms which may flag your article to them.
Launch of the T&L Reading newsletter (NEW)
CDoTL are pleased to announce the launch of the new T&L Reading newsletter.
This termly newsletter is intended to complement the Engage in T&L blog by bringing you key articles, T&L headlines and policy news from across the University. The newsletter is also interactive so please visit the clickable links for more information as you read through.
