About us

Long Duration Exposure FacilityWelcome to the Infrared Multilayer Laboratory, part of the School of Systems Engineering at the University of Reading.

The laboratory is exclusively engaged in the research, development and supply of specialist high-quality infrared optics; ranging from coatings for single optical components, to the complete spectral design and manufacture of coatings for complex infrared space-flight atmospheric sensing and ground based astronomical instruments. The laboratory has a space heritage of contributions of infrared optics in many of the most progressive scientific instrument programmes in the study of atmospheric and planetary science.

The laboratory is a recognised supplier of high-quality infrared optics to the international space research community, contributing both space qualified hardware and publications on infrared thin-film design and manufacture since 1965. The strength of the laboratory is in the ability and experience of a versatile team of thin-film engineers to design and manufacture specialist infrared coatings to the specific requirements of your instrument.

We are available to manufacture custom made coatings to your specification on a wide variety of substrate materials and sizes to suit. Some of the fully-blocked filter types that we routinely manufacture in the 3-30µm range are:
