Institute of Health Sciences
Welcome to the Institute of Health Sciences
The Institute of Health Sciences is based on the London Road campus of the
University of Reading. It will form the basis of future health developments
linking the University with other health care providers. At present the
Institute houses clinical academics who have been jointly appointed between the
University of Reading and Healthcare Trusts. These include Professor Margot
Gosney (Institute Director), Dr David Oliver (Elderly Care Medicine), and
Professor Gary Butler (Paediatrics - Growth and Development) who are jointly
appointed with the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. In addition, Professor Jim
Connelly is jointly appointed between the University of Reading and the Primary
Care Trusts. Professor Christina Victor, Professor of Gerontology and Health
Services Research, and Head of the School of Health and Social Care, is also
very involved in our work. She is a joint theme-leader for Ageing research. Some researchers based at the University's School of Health and
Social Care spend time at the Institute and cover areas such as Social
Gerontology, Public Health, Primary Care, Nursing, and Social Work.
The Institute provides a focus for research programmes that are being
co-ordinated through the University of Reading. These programmes include Ageing,
Older People, Neurology and Rehabilitation, and Maternal and Child Health and
Development.
The Institute is seeking to liaise closely with local and regional partners
in collaborations on research projects, in particular with members of the
Berkshire Research and Development Consortium.
In addition, the Institute runs a monthly Clinical Update session for GPs,
nurses and clinicians, and will also run short training and teaching courses
relating to health care.
Health research themes currently include:
- Ageing, Older People, Neurology and Rehabilitation
- Maternal and Child Health and Development
- Metabolic and Human Nutrition
- Pharmacy
