Medieval ruinsFew subjects are as wide-ranging as history. The study of the past offers you the chance to both foster the skills of critical analysis and expression, and to broaden your understanding of the world. You will develop confidence, learn how to work independently and as part of a group, pursue your own interests and practice self-discipline and self-motivation.

Each of the three years at Reading forms a distinct part of the degree. Programmes are provided on a modular basis and students must take 120 credits for each of the three parts, In the first year, combined or single history students must make up at least half their credits from modules offered by other departments: students may opt here for a menu that includes German, French, Italian, English literature, European Studies, Politics, Philosophy, Economics, Classics, History of Art and Archaeology. Students intending to read for a combined-subject degree must study both subjects at Part I. It is possible to change your degree programme (e.g. from a single to a combined, or vice versa, or to move to another subject) after successful completion of Part I.
