Research centres and groups

At the Department of History we are involved in a number of Research centre and groups, including:

Early Modern Research Centre

The Early Modern Research Centre is established jointly between the Schools of History and English, and also involving members of the Departments of Politics and Classics.

The Centre provides a base for collaborative projects, conferences, seminars, publications, bids for funding, and an interdisciplinary MA(Res) Early Modern Culture: History, Literature and Theatre

The Schools of English and History have a long tradition of highly successful collaborative projects, organising, among other things, a much-acclaimed triennial Literature and History conferences, and the established book series, Early Modern Literature in History.

Centre for the Advanced Study of French History

The Centre for the Advanced Study of French History was established in 2004 to celebrate the centenary of the Entente Cordiale. Its aims are to:

Establish the University of Reading as a centre of expertise in the history of France and promote research into French history and into Franco-British history. To attract MA and doctoral students to undertake research in these areas. To foster the collection of materials relating to French history. To attract funding for research into French and Franco-British history and to facilitate cross-disciplinary teaching in History and French Studies.

Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies

The Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies (GCMS) was established in 1965, the first such Centre to be created in Britain.

It has three aims: To facilitate and encourage multidisciplinary study at postgraduate level, to provide a forum for all medievalists within The University of Reading, and to act as a social and intellectual meeting-point for medievalists from the wider community.

Research Centre for Evacuee and War Child Studies

The ResCEW is the first and foremost tool for research in evacuation and war child studies in the United Kingdom. It developed out of Dr. Martin Parsons' extensive research into Evacuees in the Second World War. ResCEW is based at the University of Reading and works closely with the Evacuee Reunion Association (ERA). ResCEW offers many possibilities to anyone whose interested in this fascinating area of research.

Museum of English Rural Life

The Museum of English Rural Life was founded by the University of Reading in 1951 to reflect and record the changing face of farming and the countryside. It houses Designated collections of national importance that span the full range of objects, archives, photographs, film and books. Today, it forms part of the University's Museums and Collections Service.

The Museum operates as a major resource and research centre for the history of food, farming and the countryside with links into the School of History and other academic departments at the University.

Centre for Modern Italian History

The University of Reading is the United Kingdom's leading centre for the study of modern Italian history. Library holdings on Italy are unique, and comprise more than 20,000 volumes, over 130 periodical titles, and important archive and newspaper collections. The Centre for Modern Italian History (CMIH) has been set up to utilise these holdings to the full, promote postgraduate study of modern Italian history in Britain, and foster links with scholars in Italy and other overseas countries.
