hist-merlspecialcollectionsThe MA in History covers the period from 1500 up to the present day.

This MA programme aims to develop your research skills and understanding of the key issues that inform today's debates, culture and society. You will gain the necessary skills to enhance career as, for example, a teacher, journalist or civil servant. You will also be able to pursue careers in museums, archival studies and heritage. The programme also offers tailored training for students who plan to pursue an academic career and start a doctorate.

Pathways

Within our MA programme, you have freedom to build your own pathways and specialise in the kind of history you really enjoy!

Our cooperation with other Departments at Reading means that our students rely on a wide range of expertise and can work in a truly interdisciplinary environment. The possibilities are truly endless.

We also work closely with the Museum of English Rural Life and with the Institute of Education. This means that we offer training on a wide range of transferable skills that will equip you for a possible future career in education and heritage.

Academic support tailored to your needs

Each MA student works closely with an academic supervisor. They offer guidance, support and monitor the progress of your research. They are there to ensure that you master all the appropriate research skills and that your research project comes to its successful conclusion. In addition, the MA Director keeps in regular touch with all the MA students and is available to offer academic feedback and pastoral care. Particular attention is dedicated to part-time and modular students and we take great pride in making sure that all our students feel part of the Department.
