Staff Profile:Professor Lindy Grant

Name:
Professor Lindy Grant
Job Title:
Professor
Responsibilities:

I contribute to our Part 1 course on 'Landmarks in European History, 1066-1945', and teach a Part 1 Approaches course on The Letters of Abelard and Heloise.  For Part 2, I teach a course 'Power and Culture in Capetian France, 987-1270', and for Part 3, a Special Subject course, 'From Louis the Fat to Louis the Saint: the Image of Kingship in Capetian France'.  I am convenor for Undergraduate dissertations.

Postgraduate Supervision:

I offer options on Medieval Monasticism, Kingship and Queenship in Twelfth and Thirteenth Century France, and Architectural Patronage in France in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries on the MA (Res) offered by the GCMS, and supervise MA (Res) dissertations within these areas, and other areas of my research interests.  I would be glad to supervise any research student with an interest in politics, religion and culture, especially architecture, within Capetian France and its neighbours in the High Middle Ages.

Areas of Interest:

My research interests range across politics, religion and culture in Capetian France and its neighbours in the 11th and 13th centuries, and my approach is essentially interdisciplinary.  I am the author of Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis: Church and State in Early Medieval France, Longman's Medieval World Series, 1998, and Architecture and Society in Normandy, c.1120-c.1270, Yale University Press, 2005, and am now working on a biography of Blanche of Castile.  Recent articles and papers have explored aspects of architectural patronage and the impact of ecclesiastical reform on the North French Church in the 12th century.  I have a particular interest in questions of cultural identity, in patronage and the representation of power and rulership, and in the cultural impact of ecclesiastical reform.
