Postgraduate Supervision

I welcome proposals for postgraduate research projects in early modern history, religion and belief, including reformation studies, witchcraft, magic and superstition, and the relationship between the natural and supernatural in this period.

Areas of Interest:

Research Statement

My main research interests lie in the history of belief in early modern Europe, broadly understood to include the history of the Christian churches, religion, witchcraft, superstition and natural history.

Previous research projects including two books on the history of clerical celibacy and marriage, a study of miracles and magic in reformation histories of the medieval church, a textbook on the early reformation in Europe, and a project on the Elizabethan clergy. I have co-edited volumes on ideas about superstition in reformation Europe, and early modern debates over authority. More recent work has focused on intersections between the natural and the supernatural, including witchcraft.
