Halls of residence options
When thinking about which Hall you might like to live at and the different types of rooms available there are a number of options you need to consider:
Types of Rooms
There are three types of room available:
En Suite Room - bedrooms with a shower, washbasin and toilet in the room.
Standard Room with Washbasin - washbasin in the room, other bathroom facilities are shared with other residents.
Standard Room with no Washbasin - do not have a washbasin in the room and all the bathroom facilities are shared with other residents.
The furniture provided in the study bedrooms varies slightly between Halls but in all of the rooms a single bed, mattress, wardrobe, drawers, desk and desk chair are provided.
Catered or Self-catered?
You have the option of a room with or without meals provided.
Self-catered Accommodation (no meals provided)
In the self-catering Halls we provide kitchen facilities that you share with a number of other Hall residents. The kitchens are equipped with all the essential items such as cooker, fridge, freezer, kettle, microwave and toaster. You only need to bring cutlery, plates, bowls, pots and pans.
The main advantage of self-catering accommodation is flexibility, giving you the opportunity to eat what, when and where you like. Self-catering might be more appropriate for students with medical or religious diets.
Catered Accommodation (meals provided)
In our catered Halls of Residence you will receive nineteen meals a week consisting of breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week and breakfast and lunch at the weekends. Here is a typical menu from a catered Hall (PDF-44KB).
Small kitchens (or pantries) are shared amongst groups of students for preparing drinks and light snacks.
Fully catered accommodation offers a well balanced range of meals with vegetarian options at every meal. The cost of the meals is included in your accommodation fees, so you will not need to worry about budgeting for food. You will have informal contact with other students at meal times.
Residency Periods
Term time only - you live in your room during term time but will have to move your belongings out of your room during vacations. This is a 30 week residency.
Term time plus - you live in your room during term time and are able to leave your belongings in your room over the Christmas and Easter vacations. However, you cannot live in your room during the vacations. This is a 30 week residency.
Term time and two vacations - you live in your room during term time and Christmas and Easter vacations. Many international students use this option. This is a 38 week residency.
