Exploring the role of deadwood in the forest soil carbon cycle.
This project aims to identify the total volume of deadwood in UK woodlands and subsequently calculate the carbon stocks held within. Using laboratory studies, the scale of carbon fluxes from deadwood into the soil as dissolved organic carbon, as well as the effect on other biogeochemical processes will be assessed. Particularly of interest is the impact of varying forest management practices and the potential for deadwood to have a priming effect on soil microbes. This project is funded by NERC Scenario DTP and Forest Research.
I completed a BSc in Ecology (First Class Hons.) and MSc in Wetland Science and Conservation (Distinction) at Bangor University. My Masters dissertation investigated the potential use of water treatment sludge as a tool for restoring peatlands degraded through drainage. This focused on the impacts that additions of sludge had to peatland biogeochemical cycling and the growth of native flora. Following my Masters, I worked for a few years as a coding analyst at a market research company before deciding to pursue a PhD related to soil biogeochemical processes. I am now involved with providing project support to a few external projects alongside my PhD, such as the Earthwatch Sustainability Program.
