How you learn
Teaching methods vary across the modules and feature a combination of lectures, practical classes, field work, small group tutorials, and the use of on-line resources. Some of our lectures are available for download as podcasts.
“The lecturers were brilliant! Every single one was enthusiastic, supportive and often had a great sense of humour. I have learned so much and developed in ways I never thought I would.”
Your final year will be spent carrying out a personal research project under the supervision of a member of academic staff allocated according to the topic you choose.
Our staff work on a wide range of research projects both in the UK and around the world. Our research feeds directly into your studies and our excellent equipment and facilities are available to our students during teaching and for final year research.
You will study on our beautiful parkland campus at Whiteknights, a long-running winner in consecutive Green Flag Awards.
We treat our campus as a laboratory; both staff and students make the most of their immediate surroundings for field work.
Reading is ideally located close to London and superb transport links ensure that urban and rural environments are all easily accessible – both in the UK and overseas.
“A great place for students and the Geography department really adds to this. The campus is great, it's lovely to see all the greenery on the way to lectures and the facilities on campus are great.”
You will learn with internationally-recognised academics researching and teaching global topics including: development, sustainability, globalisation, climate change and governance, hydrology, landscapes and ecology, paleoecology, dryland environments, and glaciology.
Your studies will encompass the local region and extend to regions across the world; for example, Reading and the Loddon catchment through to South America and Africa.
“Overall the teaching standard was exceptional. Lecturers show genuine passion for their subject.”
Flexibility and choice
You can select from a wide range of modules across the Department and the University, giving a high degree of flexibility. You will have the chance to tailor your degree to your own interests, building a programme that offers a unique level of choice and individuality. You can choose to follow a specialist pathway through your degree and focus on a particular theme or choose more widely to develop a broader programme of study.
“The main factor that pulled me towards this course at the University of Reading was the flexibility within the course. It was good to know that I'd be able to choose from a large selection of optional modules to tailor the course to what I wanted to learn, within this large subject matter, rather than being restricted to only certain aspects that I may have not been interested in. This makes the course much more enjoyable, as I'm sure you will find! ”
