Undergraduate courses
Film, Theatre & Television at the University of Reading is among the leading and longest established university film and theatre departments in the country. We have been teaching film and theatre for almost 40 years and combine stability with a passion for creativity and innovation. Research and teaching in the newer area of television has been established in the Department since the 1990s.
Our teaching quality has been consistently rated 'Excellent' and our research was awarded a grade 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. Our enthusiastic, dedicated tutors are keen thinkers and practitioners who enjoy working closely with students and fostering independent creativity and critical awareness. They provide a lively, intellectually stimulating environment in which to gain a highly respected and academically rigorous degree.
Distinctive features of our undergraduate degree courses include:
- an emphasis on the modern period, from the late nineteenth century onward.
- a concern with the specific qualities of theatre, film and television as cultural forms and with their overlapping features.

- broad and inclusive cultural scope, provided by specialist researchers in a wide range of fields, including Eastern European film and theatre, Chinese theatre, contemporary Hollywood, British television, film and theatre, Art Cinema and artists' film.
Through our structured study and support systems, we ensure that students acquire an impressive portfolio of abilities. Many of our graduates are employed in sections of the film, theatre and media industries and related areas of publishing, administration, journalism and education.
