Acting with Facts: Performing the Real on Stage and Screen, 1990-2010 (September 2010)

This conference was held in September 2010, and was the final event held as part of the research project Acting With Facts: Actors Performing the Real in British Theatre and Television since 1990. Presentations at this event discussed Verbatim and Tribunal Theatres, Community Theatre involving documentary/factual material, film and television docudramas and historical reconstructions, and film and television 'biopics'. Speakers analysed the specific demands made by different media on actors' and other creatives' competencies when making or performing fact-based drama. The conference investigated comparisons and correspondences between docudrama and fictional drama. Academic keynote speakers included John Corner, David Edgar, Steven Lipkin, Mary Luckhurst, Carol Martin and Brian Winston. Professional theatre, film and TV practitioners speaking at the conference included Sara Clifford, Brian Hill, Patricia Hodge, Bella Merlin, Jan Ravens, Alan Rosenthal and Sylvia Syms, and members of the theatre company Actors for Human Rights.
