Television Without Borders: Transfers, Translations and Transnational Exchange (June 2008)

Television without Borders Conference poster, University of ReadingThe Department hosted the three-day conference 'Television without Borders' on 27 to 29 June. Speakers travelled from all over the world, including Australia, North America, China and most European countries, to discuss issues relating to the globalisation of television, television crossing the borders of different media, and digital technologies, in particular the internet and mobile technologies. Archivists gave insights into national archives with a wealth of transnational sources whilst producers discussed how they have dealt with addressing global audiences. Academic keynote speakers were Michele Hilmes, Stephanie Marriott and Jeffrey Miller, and guest speakers included TV producers Paul Kerr and Tony Garnett, and representatives from the National Public Broadcasting Archives (USA), BBC Audiovisual Archives, and Sound and Vision (Netherlands). The conference was one of the outcomes of the AHRC-funded research project British TV Drama and Acquired US Programmes (1970-2000). The research was led by Professor Jonathan Bignell with Dr Simone Knox and Dr. Elke Weissmann as Postdoctoral Researchers.
