Entry requirements
All applications for undergraduate courses should be made through the UCAS system.
Please don't hesitate to contact our admissions tutors, Tom Brown and Faye Woods, for further advice.
Entry requirements for the subjects we offer are split as follows:
Single subject degree - BA in Film & Theatre
In total, about fifty-five students are admitted each year to the single subject course in Film & Theatre.
We are looking for intelligent students who show evidence of a real interest and enthusiasm for film and theatre, even if you have not had the opportunity to study the subjects at GCSE or A level. Your work on the course will include attendance at screenings and performances and practical work as well as lectures and seminars.
In order to gain a place on the course you would normally be expected to have a good A level profile. The usual minimum requirement is:
- A Level - BBB (or ABC)
- Scottish Higher grade range
ABBBC - BBBBB
-
Scottish Advanced Higher grade range ABC - BBB
-
Irish Highers - BBBBB
- Candidates studying for the International Baccalaureate are normally expected to achieve a pass overall and 6,5,5 in three higher-level subjects.
For preference, A levels would include at least one of the following: English Literature, Drama, Theatre Studies, Film Studies, History, Dance, Sociology, Media Studies, Philosophy, Classics, Psychology.
For the single honours course in Film & Theatre we require all UK and EU candidates to attend an interview day before any offer is made. Overseas candidates are not required to attend an interview, providing the candidate can provide evidence of appropriate academic ability and the application is supported by a very positive reference. Whenever possible we do, however, invite overseas candidates to visit the Department, and academic staff are as flexible as possible in making arrangements to meet overseas candidates visiting the Department.
Our aim in calling candidates to the interview day is to give us an opportunity to see you working in several different contexts, and to give you an opportunity to find out as much as possible about the Department and the University. We arrange the day to be as enjoyable as possible. A typical interview day therefore includes:
- a talk by a member of staff, detailing the nature of the course
- the opportunity to meet as many of the Departmental staff as possible and plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the Department and the course
- a practical workshop session run by a member of the theatre staff
- a seminar discussion about a film extract with a member of film staff
- a short (ten-minute) individual interview
- the opportunity to meet our current students
- a tour of the site including Departmental facilities, student accommodation and Students' Union facilities.
At the end of the interview day members of the academic staff of the Department discuss each candidate's suitability for the course. The decision will also take into account: the predicted (or achieved) grades at A Level (or equivalent); the personal statement on the UCAS form; the reference on the UCAS form; any other particular circumstances perceived to be relevant in addition to performance at interview. We accept mature students who do not have a conventional academic background, but who can demonstrate that they have relevant experience and that they have the intellectual capacity and the motivation to succeed on the course. All applications from mature students are treated sympathetically, and they are recommended to contact the admissions tutor personally if they wish to discuss their application informally.
Combined subject degrees with Film & Theatre
The study of Film & Theatre can be combined with English Literature and Art.
If Film & Theatre is combined with English Literature, students do not attend interview. For this degree, English is the lead department and you should make contact with that Department in the first instance. Visit the Department of English Language and Literature website for more information and for contact details.
The combination with Art is a four-year course. Art is the lead department for this course and candidates are interviewed by the Department of Art because the degree involves practical work in this subject. For more information, please visit the Department of Art website.
