Areas of Interest:

I have published extensively in the areas of post-war and especially contemporary British theatre with particular emphasis on social context and politics. Areas of specific focus have included the work of Martin Crimp and the phenomenology of theatre. Further to my monograph on Crimp's work and my edited and co-edited volumes on contemporary British playwriting, I have also published a number of articles and book chapters in these areas. My next monograph, Social and Political Theatre in 21st-Century Britain: Staging Crisis, will be published in Spring 2017 in the Methuen Drama Engage series. I am also currently developing a number of individual and collaborative publication projects focusing on contemporary British theatre.

In the recent period my research has increasingly moved into the area of theatre, science and climate change and I am currently working on the monograph Theatre & Environment, which will be published in Palgrave's Macmillan's Theatre & series.

A major part of my research concerns European and especially German-speaking theatre practices. Within this research cluster, my priority area of investigation is Austrian theatre from Modernism to the present in relation to socio-political conditions, funding structures, and internationalisation practices, including recent developments in immigration and the refugee crisis.

My research also extends to adaptation and translation, which have always featured in my critical writing for the theatre. I edit the forthcoming series Adaptation in Theatre and Performance (Palgrave Macmillan) with Kara Reilly. I have organised and co-organised a number of international conferences and symposia and I collaborate widely with a network of British - and internationally - based academics and artists.
