About us

We are a dynamic and creative department which has been leading its field for over four decades. Not only did we pioneer the teaching of film studies in British Higher Education, but we have an established world-leading reputation in theatre and television. We are very proud of the excellence in both our teaching and research and this is reflected in our high profile in nationwide assessments. In the 2009 National Student Survey, over 90% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the teaching on our courses. In the last RAE (2008), 90% of our research was scored as being of world-leading or internationally-excellent quality. This strong research environment enables us to deliver one of the most exciting, innovative and unique courses on offer in the UK.
Our state-of-the-art facilities further support your learning, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In our new £11.4 million building, you will be able to study film, theatre and television using the latest technologies. A cinema, three large theatres, a TV studio with en-suite mixing facilities, individual and group editing suites and a scene construction workshop are just some of the facilities that enable you to develop your skills in each discipline, and to move flexibly between them. Your choice of degree at Reading will enable you to explore your own creative ideas in the context of rigorous critical thinking.
