10 November 1999: PARNUTS - Medical Food (England) Regulations

JFSSG Letter, 10 November 1999

The Medical Food (England) Regulations

The EC adopted Directive 1999/21/EC on dietary foods for special medical purposes. The UK is required to introduce national measures to implement these rules by 30 April 2000. The JFSSG has issued draft regulations for consultation. The Regulations would only apply to England, but separate similar legislation is being developed for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Regulations define foodstuffs which may be sold under the name "Food[s] for Special Medical Purposes"; lay down compositional requirements for specific types of medical foods; introduce mandatory nutrition and other labelling requirements needed to ensure the safe and effective use of these products; and introduce a notification system to facilitate the efficient monitoring of new products.
