Nick Brown, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, today welcomed an EU announcement that exports of British beef under the Date-based Export Scheme could begin from 1 August.
Mr Brown said,
"Next month exports of beef from the whole of the United Kingdom can start
again. I am pleased to say that this morning the European Commission agreed
that exports under the Date-based Export Scheme should be permitted as from
1 August The British beef industry has been kept out of world markets for
far too long. This should give it a much-needed boost. We have worked hard
to put in place all the safeguards that have been demanded. Beef farmers,
slaughterers and traders have been very patient and I am grateful for all
they have done. Much credit is due to all those who have made the re-start
of exports possible."
