JFSSG Letter, 24 March 1999

The Processed Cereal-Based Foods and Baby Foods for Infants and Young Children (Amendment) Regulations 1999

The letter is to announce the these Regulations have now be made (SI No 1999 No 275). They were laid before Parliament on 18 February and will come into force on 31 March 1999. They amend existing UK Regulations, the Processed Cereal-Based Foods and Baby Foods for Infants and Young Children Regulations 1997

The new Regulations provide increased consumer protection by setting specific maximum limits for the vitamin, mineral and trace element levels in fortified weaning foods. They also allow the continued marketing of some traditional UK products by introducing new protein requirements for savoury cheese dishes and some dairy deserts, and exempting sauces which accompany baby meals from protein requirements.
