10 July 1998: HYGIENE - Emergency Control Order on Suspect Cheese Amended

Department of Health Press Release, 10 July 1998

Emergency Control Order on Suspect Cheese Amended

Go-ahead to resume production given to Somerset cheese manufacturer.

The Emergency Control Order preventing the sale or distribution of Caerphilly-type cheeses associated with E.coli O157 bacteria was today amended by Tessa Jowell, Minister for Public Health. The Department of Health is satisfied, on the advice of the local public health control team, that R A Duckett & Co Ltd., the producer of Caerphilly-type cheeses, has implemented improved food hygiene measures.

The amending order (SI 1998 No 1673) means that R A Duckett & Co Ltd has now been given the go-ahead to resume production from Saturday 11 July. However the amendment does not affect action taken under the Emergency Control Order between 21 May and 10 July 1998.
