23 March 1998: BEEF - Legislation Enforcing EU Rules on the Labelling of Beef and Beef Products
MAFF Letter, 23 March 1998
Legislation Enforcing EU Rules on the Labelling of Beef and Beef Products
In October 1997 [See 9 October 1997], MAFF issued a consultation on UK legislation to provide for the enforcing of EU rules on the labelling of beef and beef products. As a result of comments, some amendments have been made to the draft. In particular:
- An amendment to include the standard defence of due diligence enshrined in the Food Safety Act 1990. This replaces the limited defence in the draft instrument.
- Simplification of the legislation by defining the EU Regulations.
A revised Statutory Instrument enforcing the EU legislation in Great Britain has been laid before Parliament. It is envisaged that the Regulations will enter into force on 1 April 1998. It is envisaged that a News Release announcing the full introduction of the scheme will be issued at the beginning of April. Agriculture Departments are continuing to process applications to the scheme.
