Scope of this consultation

Defra is seeking views from those involved in the trade of fishery products and other stakeholders in the fish industry. This consultation explains the proposed changes to the Fish Labelling (England) Regulations as a result of new requirements on ‘information to the consumer’ introduced by the EU Common Fisheries Policy Control Regulation (EC) No 1224/2009 and (EU) 404/2011. The consultation also seeks views on proposals to change how the list of Commercial Designations for fish will be maintained on an ongoing basis including new additions to this list.

Following consultation, new domestic regulations, Fish Labelling (England) Regulations 2012 will be laid before Parliament at the end of 2012 and will repeal the Fish Labelling (England) Regulations 2010. The new domestic regulations will apply in England. Governments in other parts of the UK (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) will be making their own separate implementing regulations.

This consultation started on 18 September 2012 and all responses should be received by 13 November 2012.
