The Welsh Assembly Government has informed the Food Standards Agency that responsibility for nutrition policy in Wales will transfer to the Assembly.
In July, the UK Government announced that nutrition policy in England would transfer from the Agency to the Department of Health. This will become effective from 1 October, and the intention is the change in Wales will take effect at the same time.
Earlier this month there were changes to the UK Government departments that have responsibility for food labelling policy. You can find out more about this at the link below. In Wales no decision has yet been made in this respect.
The devolved administrations in Scotland and Northern Ireland are currently considering whether they might wish to make any alterations to their current arrangements for nutrition policy, food labelling and composition policy, given the changes in England and Wales. At present, these functions remain the responsibility of the FSA in those countries.
