PARNUTS - Review of new baby milk controls

The FSA and Department of Health have appointed an independently chaired panel with expertise in infant nutrition, sociology, health inequalities and advertising to review new controls on the advertising and presentation of infant and follow-on formula.

The Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula (England) Regulations 2007, announced last year, introduce strict controls on the advertising and promotion of infant and follow-on formula. They are intended to ensure users of the products can distinguish clearly between them, and that breastfeeding is not undermined.

When Minister for Health Dawn Primarolo MP announced the new controls last year she also committed to setting up an independent review to assess the effectiveness of the new measures and determine whether they are having the intended effect or whether further action is needed. The review will be completed within one year of the regulations coming into force.

The review panel's first meeting will take place on 5 June 2008.
