HYGIENE - FSA statement on the publication of the report of the E. coli Outbreak Control Team

The Food Standards Agency has acknowledged the publication of the report of the Outbreak Control Team (OCT) which managed the South Wales E. coli O157 outbreak in September 2005. This report details the comprehensive investigations that were undertaken as the outbreak developed and the measures that were put into place to control the outbreak.

Joy Whinney, Director of FSA Wales, commented: 'Following the conclusion of legal proceedings last week, the publication of this report shows the effort and commitment of all members of the Outbreak Control Team in managing this outbreak and protecting public health.'

The Agency will be giving evidence to the Public Inquiry chaired by Professor Hugh Pennington, which expected to begin in February 2008.

Agency responds to Wales E.coli report

The report of the Outbreak Control Team into the autumn 2005 E.coli O157 outbreak in South Wales has been published. It was completed in June last year but publication was delayed pending legal proceedings involving the local meat supplier at the centre of the outbreak.

Acknowledging the report's publication, FSA Wales Director Joy Whinney said: 'Following the conclusion of legal proceedings last week, the publication of this report shows the effort and commitment of all members of the Outbreak Control Team in managing this outbreak and protecting public health.

The report, published today, details the comprehensive investigations that were undertaken as the outbreak developed and the measures that were put into place to control the outbreak.

On 7 September William John Tudor of John Tudor & Son, Bridgend, was jailed for a year at Cardiff Crown Court after pleading guilty to seven offences relating to the supply of meat contaminated with E.coli O157 to schools.
