GMOs - Agency takes action on unauthorised GM imports

The Food Standards Agency has supported new control measures taken today by the European Commission to certify that imports of corn gluten feed from the USA are free of unauthorised GM Bt10. This follows the illegal importation into the EU from the United States of contaminated GM maize.

The FSA has instructed that all such imports be held until they can be tested.

UK food producers have informed the Agency that they continue to use non-GM sources and therefore Bt10 would not be present in food products on sale in the UK .

The Agency will continue to monitor the situation and will take action to test products as soon as a validated testing method has been provided.
