FOOD LAW - Food Safety Act 1990 (Amendment) Regulations 2004 and the General Food Regulations 2004 Guidance

This guidance has been produced with the aim of providing informal, non-statutory advice and should be read in conjunction with the Food Safety Act 1990 (Amendment) Regulations 2004 (No. 2990) and the General Food Regulations 2004 (No. 3279).

EC Regulation 178/2002 came into force on 21 February 2002 , although certain key provisions apply only from 1 January 2005 .

The principle aim of this regulation is to protect public health and consumers' interests in relation to food.

The Food Safety Act 1990 (Amendment) Regulations 2004 and the General Food Regulations 2004 came into force on 7 December 2004 and 1 January 2005 respectively. They align domestic legislation with the general principles and requirements of Regulation 178/2002, and introduce new enforcement powers.
