NOVEL FOOD - DHA Gold , DHA-rich oil

This application is for permission to market a novel food with the EU under the EC Novel Foods and Novel Food Ingredients Regulation (258/97). Although this regulation covers applications to market genetically modified foods, this application is for a NON-GM novel food.

The application was submitted by OmegaTech and is for DHA Gold , DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) -rich oil produced from Schizochytrium sp., a marine microalgae, as a nutritional ingredient in foods. DHA-rich oil from Schizochytrium sp. is "novel" only by virtue of the source organism from which it is derived. Extensive analysis has shown that individual components of the extracted oil are all present to a significant degree in the human food chain. The use of DHA-rich oils as a food ingredient can raise intakes of DHA to potentially beneficial levels in the diet.
