CLAIMS - Agency Welcomes New Health Claims Watchdog

The Food Standards Agency welcomed the launch of the Joint Health Claims initiative today. Agency Chairman Sir John Krebs said:

"I am delighted to welcome this important step forward on health claims. We know consumers want clear and accurate information on labels so they can make informed choices about their food. It is particularly encouraging to see consumers, enforcers and industry working together to improve labelling. I wish the initiative every success."

Enquiries about the Joint Health Claims Initiative should be directed towards Roger Manley (Chairman) on 07818 092660 or Melanie Ruffell (Executive Secretary) on 07799 416444.

The Agency has identified improved food labelling as a key priority. On September 21 it launched a comprehensive Action Plan to tackle the priority labelling issues identified in consumer research and public consultation. This includes a commitment to press for an effective and practical system of verification and approval of health claims at EU level.
