The Council decided not to adopt the proposal for a Directive on coffee extracts and chicory extracts as amended by the European Parliament. It was apparent that the Member States were unable to accept all three amendments proposed by the Parliament to the Council's common position, adopted unanimously on 30 April 1998. The Conciliation Committee would consequently be convened in accordance with the rules laid down in the Treaty.
