Commission Directive 1999/39/EC Amending Directive 96/5/EC on Processed Cereal-Based Foods and Baby Foods for Infants and Young Children

Following agreement at the Standing Committee for Foodstuffs of the above Directive, it has now been published in the Official Journal of the European Communities (OJ No.L124 of 18.5.1999).

The directive sets a maximum limit of 0.01 mg/kg for individual pesticides in processed cereal-based foods and baby foods, and prohibits the use of certain more toxic pesticides in the agricultural products intended for their manufacture. The directive additionally includes provision for scientifically justifiable limits to be set for individual pesticides following a case by case review.

Member States are required to introduce regulations and permit trade in complying products by 30 June 2000. Trade in non-compliant products will be prohibited from 1 July 2002. Draft implementing regulations will be issued for public consultation in due course.
